When someone in Hyannis, Falmouth or Plymouth types “house cleaning near me” or “electrician near me”, Google shows a map with three businesses before any regular result. Those three spots get a big share of the calls. This checklist covers what we do for our clients to earn a place there.
How Google picks the businesses on the map
Google explains it in its own help center: local results are based on three things.
- Relevance: how well your profile matches what the person searched.
- Distance: how far your business is from the person or the area in the search.
- Prominence: how well known your business is, based on reviews, links, articles and your presence across the web.
You cannot change distance, but you can work hard on relevance and prominence. Everything below falls into one of those two.
1. Claim and verify your Google Business Profile
Your profile only shows up in full after Google verifies it. If you serve customers at their homes, like cleaning, painting or remodeling, set it up as a service-area business and list the towns you really cover. Do not use a fake address or a virtual office: Google suspends profiles for that.
2. Pick the right categories
The primary category is one of the strongest relevance signals. Choose the one that describes your main service as precisely as possible (“House cleaning service” beats “Cleaning service” if that is what you do), then add secondary categories for the other services you offer.
3. Fill in every field
- Services with a short description each.
- Hours, including holiday hours.
- Phone number, website and booking link.
- A description that says what you do, for whom and where, in plain words.
An incomplete profile gives Google less to match against a search.
4. Keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere
Your business name, address and phone number (NAP) should be written the same way on your profile, your website, Facebook, Yelp and any directory. Inconsistent data makes it harder for Google to trust which information is right.
5. Ask for reviews and answer every one
Reviews feed prominence and also convince the person reading them. Ask every happy customer, send them the direct review link and reply to every review, good or bad, in a calm and specific way. Never buy or write fake reviews: Google removes them and can restrict your profile.
6. Show you are active
Upload real photos and short videos of your work, your team and your trucks or storefront every week. Publish posts with your services, seasonal offers and finished jobs. An active profile gives customers more reasons to call you instead of the business next to you on the map.
7. Connect a fast website with a page for each service
Your website is where Google confirms what your profile says. Create one page per service, mention the towns you serve, add your NAP in the footer and make sure the site loads fast on a phone. A slow site loses the visitor before they ever see your phone number.
8. Earn local mentions
Links and mentions from local sources, like your chamber of commerce, suppliers, partners and local news, tell Google your business is real and known in the area.
What to expect
Local SEO is steady work. The first improvements, like more profile views and calls, usually come in the first weeks, and the results build month after month as you keep the profile, the website and the reviews moving together.
